Aerospace Titanium Alloys

Aerospace titanium grades are characterized by high strength. Strength is developed by heat treatment, and by hot working practice. While these high strength alloys are corrosion resistant, they are not as resistant as is commercially pure titanium. Some are sensitive to stress corrosion cracking in chlorides, as well as in methanol. Welding can be more difficult.

The overwhelmingly most popular is “6-4”, or Titanium 6Al-4V This is grade 5 in ASTM and ASME specifications. Grade 23 is a version of Titanium 6Al-4V which contains lower levels of interstitial elements, specifically, lower oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen. Designated Titanium 6Al-4V ELI, it is tougher and more ductile than regular 6-4. Extra Low Interstitial (ELI) wire may be used for welding both 6Al-4V and 6Al-4V ELI base metal.

Some other commonly used high strength alloys include 6Al-6V-2Sn, Titanium 10V-2Fe-3Al and Titanium 6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo. These titanium aerospace alloys are included in Harvey Titanium inventory.

Our technical resource center gives full technical specifications of all the aerospace titanium alloys.
